After teaching Scandinavian dance for several years, I became interested in calling contra dances. I've been a contra dance caller in San Diego since 1994. I also play 5-string banjo for dances with two bands: Tectonic Shakedown, and occasionally with More the Merrier.

No matter what part I'm playing (dancer, musician or caller), I love becoming one with the dance, the music, and the people in the room. As a caller, I enjoy guiding all levels of dancers through an interesting selection of dances in terms of figures, transitions, and flow.

I am a caller, dance organizer, and dance gypsy residing in North County San Diego. After being dragged to a contra dance by my sister, I fell so in love with dancing that I began teaching contra dances to my elementary school students. I called my first full night when a friend asked me to cover on short notice. I've been calling regularly ever since!

I draw on my experience as a dance gypsy to call dances that people like. My hallmark is quick walkthroughs, efficient calling, and letting the dance and music flow whenever possible. I continue to grow as a caller, and have recently begun calling squares and English Country. Please visit my website for more information.

I started contra dancing in Philadelphia in 2001 and quickly got hooked. By early 2003 I started calling, and I moved to San Diego in 2005.

I'm especially interested both in the history of contra dance as a whole, and the aesthetics of individual dance sequences. Sometimes I have fun with themed evenings, like around particular figures or histories. I also enjoy composing/perpetrating odd dances. And in my free lack-of-time, I also call English Country Dance. (See my website for more.)

I've been calling contradances in San Diego since 1989, and I play piano for contras in Figure 8, Wild and Crazy, and with our community band, More the Merrier.

I like a dance with variety in the program, in terms of figures, transitions, and pace, and I plan my own programs accordingly. I also like to leave newcomers feeling competent and wanting more, and yet provide excitement for experienced dancers as well. Often to fill a space in a program, I find myself wanting a dance with particular characteristics, and if I can't find one in my database, I compose one. My dance compositions can be viewed here.

Guest Callers Are Welcomed!

Our San Diego Contra Dance community enjoys having guest callers come into town to show off their stuff! We usually aim to book two guest callers per quarter. Please email us with your interest and availability.
